As Alberta prepares to open its doors to a regulated iGaming and legal betting market, industry professionals are asking: how can merchants be ready on day one?
To help answer that, we sat down with Manav Bhargava, a lawyer at Segev LLP and expert in gaming law, in our latest on-demand webinar: “iGaming in Alberta: What Merchants Should Know Before Market Launch.” Manav broke down what a realistic 60–90-day action plan should look like for merchants and suppliers hoping to launch as soon as the Alberta iGaming market goes live.
The 60–90 Day Action Plan Checklist
As Alberta prepares to open its doors to a regulated iGaming and legal betting market, industry professionals are asking: how can merchants be ready on day one?
According to Manav Bhargava, readiness isn’t about building an entire operation in 90 days; it’s about being prepared before time.
Here’s a breakdown of what that looks like:
Days 1–15: Mobilize and De‑Risk
- Confirm your corporate structure and identify key persons for registration and background checks.
- Define your operating model for Alberta, whether you’ll run one brand or multiple.
- Conduct a gap assessment across responsible gambling, AML, and integrity.
- Begin drafting control documentation, policies, audit logs, and incident workflows.
Days 15–45: Build the Compliance Spine
- Submit registration materials and prepare key personnel for background checks.
- Confirm vendor and supplier readiness, ensuring registered partners and clear onboarding pathways.
- Engage a testing lab and lock down certification scope for games and systems.
- Implement Alberta-specific product controls, geolocation, self-exclusion tools, and player safeguard mechanisms.
Days 45–75: Demonstrate Readiness
- Complete security testing and document remediation actions.
- Finalize operational workflows for support, AML, and incident reporting.
- Conduct a compliance evidence dry run, practice generating reports and demonstrating controls.
Days 75–90: Validate and Align
- Finalize certifications and release controls, ensuring only approved software goes live.
- Prepare incident playbooks, finalize staff training, and validate marketing compliance.
- Confirm launch readiness with Alberta’s regulator, the Alberta iGaming Commission (AiGC), aligning commercial and compliance operations.
